Benefits
An environmental management system is a method used by organizations to control and minimize their risk of exposure to environmental liabilities. Program Development
The first stage in developing an environmental management system is to identify environmental liabilities. Management then considers environmental programs that can be implemented to address these issues. A decision is then made on the priority and implementation time frame of each program in view of the cost, benefit, and resources available.
Procedures
A procedure manual is then developed that defines the duties of each person that have responsibilities for implementing the programs. These duties may include monitoring, reporting, instrument care and calibration, process control, identification of training requirements, etc. The procedures are also designed to ensure that management can review progress and make modifications.
