Risk assessments can be conducted when considering managing contaminant impacts on site. Human Health Risk Assessments evaluate the potential human health implications with contaminant exposure. Ecological Risk Assessments investigate the potential risks for ecological receptors (e.g., invertebrates, plants, wildlife) exposed to contaminants.

Risk assessments consider factors such as: contaminants of concern, receptors of concern, exposure pathways, and predictions of contaminant concentrations at receptor locations. If the assessment predicts low risk levels for the relevant receptors and the appropriate provincial regulatory agency grants approval, then the contaminants can be managed on site and a risk management program is developed.
