Resources

Hazardous and regulated waste generators need laboratories to determine their waste type and classification. They also need reliable waste haulers to ensure safe passage of their waste.

On this page, The Waste Disposal Database describes the characteristics to look for when seeking a resource to help manage your waste.

Laboratories

Good laboratories are familiar with the various federal/provincial/territorial government regulations to provide the correct analyses and standards for your waste characterization. It is important to use laboratories with developed quality control systems and analytical methodologies which satisfy local governments and accrediting bodies. Your selected laboratory should be accredited by the following agencies:

    • Canadian Association for Environmental Analytical Laboratories (CAEAL)
    • Standards Council of Canada (SCC)
    • National Accreditation of Measurement and Sampling

Waste Haulers

Waste haulers are responsible for the safe, legal, and trouble-free transport of your waste from the "cradle to the grave." As a waste generator you are responsible for determining if these haulers are certified and authorized to transport your waste. The following is a list of waste hauler essentials:

    • Several years in operation.
    • Respectable client base.
    • Minimum $5,000,000 General comprehensive, liability, and environmental insurance.
    • Permits/Licenses/Certificates - do they have all the appropriate certifications to deal with your waste?
    • Is the hauler licensed to transport under the Transport of Dangerous Goods Act (Canada)?
    • TDG - are all employees TDG trained?
    • WHMIS - are all employees WHMIS trained?
    • Responsibility - do they take responsibility for the waste in transit?
    • Placards - are all their transport vehicles appropriately labelled to carry TDG?
    • Vehicles must be appropriately designed to carry specified waste.
